But most gooning communities infuse the practice with a diverse array of kinky ideas and elements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are some of the most common kinky threads in the modern goonosphere. Some gooning communities are built around one of these fetish foci specifically, while many mix and match bits and pieces of these kinky ideas and practices to shape their own unique visions of gooning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b><i>Bating and Solosexuality<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outsiders often assume <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kinkly.com\/definition\/8634\/gooning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gooning is just a facet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kinkly.com\/2\/8752\/sex-tips\/the-dawn-of-the-solosexual\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the bator world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which focuses on elevating masturbation from a sexual sideshow to an art, and often into the central focus of people\u2019s sexual lives. (This overlaps with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/08\/21\/the_rise_of_the_solosexual_how_a_new_generation_is_rewriting_the_rules_of_sexuality_partner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solosexuality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which Jason Armstrong, a prominent solosexual, describes as a preference for masturbation over other forms of sexual activity\u2014but not all bators identify as solosexuals.)\u00a0 Armstrong, a gooner who\u2019s been writing about gooning since at least 2016, when he published <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soloxexual: Portrait of a Masturbator<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pointed out that some of the earliest gooning content seemingly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerge within and circulate through bating communities, and that there is clear overlap between bator practices like \u201ccockbabbling\u201d and the babble that gooners engage in. This suggests that many common gooning tropes may be rooted in bating ideas and practices. However, while many gooners identify themselves as bators, this connection is not universal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b><i>Porn Stans and Pornosexuals<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some gooners say that they can get into the goon state just by focusing on their own bodies, on the sensation of masturbation. A few even see the use of stimuli like porn as a distraction, Armstrong pointed out. But a large number of gooners seem to feel that, as one gooner who goes by Afrikanking told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zipper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cto enjoy a nice long session you need good porn.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many gooning communities run with the idea that porn is vital, and share tons of porn as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goon fuel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, urging each other to check out certain videos or performers. Some gooners, or entire communities, fixate on one porn star or adult content creator. These \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">porn stans<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> buy every new scene from their favorite creator,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AngelAuLait\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angel Au Lait<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a content creator who focuses on making videos for gooners. \u201cThey repost stuff to get others to do the same. They \u2026 value the creator,\u201d praising their content and encouraging them to make more in supportive rather than pushy ways, \u201cand goon to them in a way that is elevated because of this parasocial connection.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some gooners consider their intense focus on porn, and gooning sessions, a simple hobby\u2014no different than hardcore baseball card collecting. PornosexualDevotee,* a gooner who moderates a gooning forum with over 125,000 members, told us that he spends loads of time \u201cbuying porn, learning new porn stars, watching enough porn to where you can recognize someone just from a tattoo or even their asshole,\u201d but stressed that he also has a life, and a relationship, beyond porn and gooning. However, some consider themselves <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/love-and-sex-in-the-digital-age\/201806\/solosexuality-and-pornosexuality-learned-or-innate\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pornosexuals<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people whose sexuality is focused on porn rather than other people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few \u201cunsavory\u201d porn-obsessive gooning communities, Gooner-Tay,* a gooner who operates a smaller but still vibrant gooning forum, noted, in which people steal content, or \u201cshare pictures of people they know in real life\u201d without their knowledge or consent, which \u201ccan spill over into involuntary porn.\u201d But for the most part, Au Lait argued, porn-loving and pornosexual gooners are highly ethical and respectful in the ways they procure and share porn. So unsurprisingly, in recent years a fair number of adult content creators have started producing pictures and videos specifically to feed these conscientious fanatics. However, gooners often create their own content as well, and share it freely among their communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People occasionally talk about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gooner <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gooning porn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a distinct genre. But this is actually an imprecise term. It can refer to porn memes and compilation videos featuring text or audio that urge gooners to keep masturbating, to get dumb, but not to cum, or offer them gooning guidance. It can refer to images and videos that focus on spiral patterns, flashing colors, and quick cuts. (More on that later.) Or it can refer to pictures, video, and audio of people engaging in gooning sessions, often while pulling extreme goon faces, which encourages or fuels other gooners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, not all porn-loving gooners like gooning porn<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or use it as their fuel of choice. Nor are gooners the only people who enjoy gooner porn. There\u2019s a substantial audience out there of people who just like the aesthetics or idea of gooning (but not the practice), and want to get off to it. No one <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zipper <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoke to would consider these gooner-lovers gooners themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b><i>Addiction Play<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A fair number of gooners describe themselves as masturbation and\/or porn <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addicts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who can\u2019t help but compulsively indulge in gooning sessions day after day, more and more\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/whoreuro.com\/ultimate-guide-to-gooning-porn-how-to-goon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including Catherine Duffy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a notable <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goonette<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who writes about her gooning experiences on her site, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whoreuro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and runs adult industry consultancy Kink Consult. At times, she defines gooning as \u201cthe worship of porn\u201d above all else. In addiction-focused gooning communities, people share stories about their inability to control their obsessions, their efforts to stop engaging with masturbation or porn, and their constant <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relapses<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Often, members of these communities try to trigger each other into relapsing, encouraging them to give in to their addictions, and to embrace their descent deeper and deeper into a deviant hole.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey love being reminded that porn is better than their potential girlfriends, canceling plans with friends for porn, being reminded that they only deserve porn,\u201d said Au Lait. They might become \u201cunable to get hard for anything but porn, or not be interested in real life relationships.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the more controversial threads within the gooning world, which fuels the notion that, as Duffy put it, \u201cgooners and goonettes [are] weirdos, sexual creeps, socially awkward, etc.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the vast majority of cases, this talk is all fetishization and kink play. As the writer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sexualhealthalliance.com\/nymphomedia-blog\/do-you-goon-boo-gooning-described\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estelle Garrett of the Sexual Health Alliance explains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it takes sex- and porn-negative tropes like the notion that \u201cporn will rot your brain and make you waste your life masturbating\u201d and flips them on their heads, into something hot that people can fuck with and get off to. (Not everyone who engages in porn and masturbation addiction-play goons, but the overlap is common.) \u201cMost gooners and goonettes I\u2019ve met have been completely normal when it comes to socializing, knowing boundaries, and maintaining a healthy life outside of the lifestyle,\u201d Duffy explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is meant to be a fun fantasy and activity,\u201d noted Sally, a trans gooner active in gooning forums,* adding that many memes urging people to relapse are not serious, but very insider-y jokes that play into a particular fetish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile fetishization is great, real addiction is not,\u201d Duffy stressed. \u201cIn the event that the lifestyle is becoming harmful to you and the people you care about, seek help.\u201d (While most addiction <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/guides\/health\/mental-health\/porn-addiction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts and psychologists don\u2019t think porn is addictive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or consider porn addiction a distinct condition, they note that it is possible to form a problematic dependence on anything.) Many addiction play-focused communities engage regularly in out-of-play conversations about mental health, ethics, and kink-life balance, and connect members with support and resources if needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b><i>Overstimulation and Goon Caves<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to banish any thoughts beyond the goon, some gooners attempt to flood their senses with stimuli. This may involve using tons of toys\u2014\u201cfleshlights and sex dolls, cock rings, VR headsets, psychedelic LED lights,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/misswaltrude?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mistress Waltrude,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a self-proclaimed \u201cmuse for the gooning culture\u201d and \u201cfindom televangelist,\u201d rattled off. But often it involves the creation of a dedicated gooning space, shut off from the world, and filled with speakers and monitors (usually three or four but up to a dozen) blasting erotic content (usually porn but not always). \u201cOne of my favorite parts of gooning is assembling as many screens as possible, to watch as much porn content at once as possible,\u201d Gooner-Tay explained.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe overstimulated goon\u2019s ideal set-up is being in a completely dark room, surrounded by wall-to-wall screens, playing tons of different porn, with wall-to-wall sound, tons of toys, lube, textures,\u201d explained Au Lait. \u201cThey are absolutely lost in the sauce, and brainless from the flashing lights, bright colors, over-the-top and dramatic oiled-up porn that becomes their world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some communities refer to dedicated gooning spaces as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/93k9gp\/enter-the-goon-cave-where-porn-and-masturbation-is-all-that-exists\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goon caves<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; their members often take pride and joy in sharing images of their cave setups with others. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the focus on blatant and open excess in overstimulation and goon caves, this facet of gooning has attracted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/93k9gp\/enter-the-goon-cave-where-porn-and-masturbation-is-all-that-exists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much of the popular media coverage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourmeme.com\/memes\/subcultures\/gooning-goon-cave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meme making surrounding gooners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b><i>Intoxication<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overstimulation can involve the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talktofrank.com\/drug\/poppers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substances like poppers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, boosting gooners\u2019 sense of euphoria and arousal in sprints and stretches. But many gooners who aren\u2019t looking to flood their senses also use poppers\u2014and alcohol, cannabis, prescription meds like Adderall, or any other number of substances\u2014to enhance their goon as well. Each substance contributes something different to the pursuit of the goon state. Amphetamines like Adderall can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10550887.2020.1771236?journalCode=wjad20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really focus people in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the singular experience and sensation of masturbation, for example. Meanwhile, alcohol and cannabis can \u201cnumb our brains,\u201d as Gooner-Tay put it, which can help \u201cget dumb.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b><i>Hypnosis \/ Mesmerism<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many gooners consider the goon state a sort of trance, it shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise that they might use hypnotic practices and content to try to help them reach it. This helps to explain the prominence of strobing lights, spirals, repetitive phrases, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/binaural-beats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">binaural beats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other forms of what Mistress Waltrude calls \u201cvisual mind fuckery\u201d that pervades so much gooning content: These are all classic hypnotic tools\u2014although to some gooners who aren\u2019t looking to get mesmerized into the goon or familiar with these techniques, they can just read as a unique gooning aesthetic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><br \/><br \/><\/p><p><b><i>Dom\/sub Dynamics<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGooning is inherently about surrendering control,\u201d Au Lait pointed out. Plenty of goons simply surrender to the sensations in their own bodies, and \u201cwork on autopilot,\u201d she added. But it\u2019s also fairly common for goons to surrender control <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to someone else<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014to submit to a dominant figure or force that will guide their empty minds through the gooning experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some gooners consider themselves submissives to the abstract concept of porn, or to a gooning community. There are forums for gooners to open themselves up to the commands of anyone and everyone in the gooning world. (\u201cGive me tasks, ask me questions, send me porn. Whatever you want. Limits scat, vomit, blood, public,\u201d reads a recent post <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/r\/FapDeciders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on one forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) Others give in to \u201cporn mommies,\u201d either porn stars or more dominant (usually female) gooners who create content that encourages gooners to keep going, tells them how to touch themselves, and guides them through sessions. But people\u2019s partners and pro Doms also get involved in one-on-one dom\/sub gooning dynamics.
