Perhaps most notably, after spending <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zippermagazine.com\/how-the-pandemic-made-us-kinkier-by-sunny-megatron\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two years largely restricted to online spaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/newsletter\/2022-12-10\/opinion-newsletter-covid-surge-masks-opinion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ongoing pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we found safe ways to start reopening in-person venues and events. But rather than abandon the internet in favor of these reemerging options, we also strengthened and expanded pandemic-era digital communities, deepening and broadening networks and making the community more accessible than ever. Oh and *<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cough cough<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* the year also saw the launch of Zipper Magazine, a space for nuanced conversations about specific kinks and fetishes, as well as the community as a whole, that are accessible to insiders and outsiders alike. (That&#8217;s the goal at least!)\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But 2022 also served up a slew of reminders that, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gloriabrame.com\/the-mistress-and-the-mouse-on-the-evolving-bdsm-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for all the strides<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mic.com\/life\/vanilla-sex-shaming\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the kink community\u2019s made<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in terms of visibility, acceptance, accessibility, inclusivity, education, and safety, growth is a gradual and perpetual process\u2014and there will always be more issues to grapple with. Notably, waves of crackdowns on kinksters (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/m7gbgb\/the-internets-most-popular-fetish-site-is-flagging-people-as-sex-workers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially pro dommes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) on social media pointed to the continued challenges of censorship and stigma online. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamag.com\/article\/hit-hard-by-covid-l-a-s-b-d-s-m-community-but-its-bouncing-back\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lingering effects of the pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, emerging economic woes, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/93abxz\/save-kink-spaces-protest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ever-shifting laws and regulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> put a spotlight on the fragility of dedicated in-person kink spaces. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/topics\/pride\/article\/2022\/06\/20\/i-want-see-more-racial-diversity-kink-community\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fresh accounts of microaggressions<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/sexography.net\/i-love-bdsm-heres-why-i-ll-never-go-back-to-the-kink-scene-7cce136f95eb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at kink events, as well as the hopelessness some expressed about the chances of their local leaders hearing them out, much less addressing these issues, laid bare persistent safety and inclusivity shortcomings. (That issue is far from universal; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yesmagazine.org\/issue\/pleasure\/2022\/05\/18\/finding-freedom-in-black-bdsm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some kink spaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are incredibly thoughtful and proactive on this front.) And that\u2019s just a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.out.com\/commentary\/2022\/4\/15\/no-kink-pride-what-discourse-leaves-out-about-lgbtq-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smattering of the issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that came on kinksters\u2019 radars in 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we head into a new year, full of opportunity to tackle these and other issues, Zipper<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asked thirteen prominent kinksters to share their hopes, dreams, and intentions for the community and its trajectory throughout 2023. I hope 2023 brings a lot more kinky parties, educational events, and conferences. I hope we will be able to navigate connectivity while maintaining awareness of risks to our health, and our communities\u2019 health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The push for accessibility and safety in kink spaces for people of all races and sexualities and people with disabilities is growing more pronounced in the kink community. I\u2019m definitely manifesting for those events to be successful, and to spark further changes in that direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My biggest intention for the community in 2023 is that we will continue to dismantle stereotypes about kink. I\u2019ve been on the internet for a long time, but for some reason it seemed as if in 2022 in particular there was a lot of backlash against kink, whether in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pedestrian.tv\/entertainment\/machine-gun-kelly-megan-fox-blood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responses to recent celebrity scandals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or through misinformation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.podchaser.com\/podcasts\/pink-kink-1675022\/episodes\/debunking-tiktok-misinformatio-154334963\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on apps like TikTok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As social media becomes a bigger part of our lives every year, I believe that we can harness these platforms for good as well, like helping people discover themselves and accurately learn about what the kink community does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps we can also finally rid our community of endless infighting about who\u2019s kinkier, who\u2019s doing BDSM the \u201cright way,\u201d and what the proper definition of this or that term is. So in the coming year, our personal goal is to reconnect within our power exchange on a deeper and more meaningful level. It means finding new and thoughtful ways to sink into and embrace our roles as Dom and sub. We\u2019re going to keep doing that in as many ways as possible to help others create a happy, healthy power exchange in their lives. Especially those who want to live a D\/s life but aren\u2019t quite sure how to do that when the vanilla world interferes. We&#8217;ve seen the growth of a population of what I call &#8220;50 Shades&#8221; Academy Graduates, who have misguided ideas about what it means to be kinksters, and with them, more and more incorrect information pumped into the community, (mis)informed by their lack of exposure to our long-standing rules and protocols. If we OGs don&#8217;t step up and course-correct, we&#8217;ll be failing in our duty to the community that gave us a home when it was much harder for us to find each other. Because we should be able to do what we want on the internet without being tracked by advertisers or the state. And because policy decisions that could mean life or death for a lot of people are currently being left in the hands of big, private corporations, and that really needs to be addressed. So much <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/musk-denial-true-cost-twitter-implosion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">horrific shit has gone down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the internet this year, like the constant doxing of sex workers and queer and kink individuals, that I hope that maybe we can start finding meaningful ways of organizing to push back on all of this.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People think it\u2019s such a herculean task to change the way the internet works that they can\u2019t do anything about it and just have to live with it. But think about how <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decriminalizesex.work\/advocacy\/sesta-fosta\/what-is-sesta-fosta\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FOSTA-SESTA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only passed into law four years ago, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90741323\/four-years-after-sesta-fosta-a-new-bill-investigates-its-harm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s changed the internet <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dramatically<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So we can change the way the internet works\u2014it\u2019s just that no one in power has been willing to change it for the good so far.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are in a position to be able to relatively safely come out as kinky need to do so. They need to use their platforms, even if they\u2019re just saying, \u201cI\u2019m kinky in XYZ ways\u201d openly. I have a friend who\u2019s an assistant professor at the College of William &amp; Mary and who makes a point of speaking out in defense of kink, queer people, and sex workers and written about being kink and bisexual. In her Virginia town, being willing to say these things openly has had a really profound local effect. This new model code, which the American Law Institute will publish this year, replaces outdated case law that held that \u201cconsent is not a defense\u201d for a BDSM act. That case law made a lot of what we do illegal even if it was consensual, including activities as mild as hot wax play. Now that Explicit Prior Permission is being introduced in court cases, it\u2019s important for everyone to know the five things they need for legal consent to kink: Before you start, when you\u2019re sound of mind, you need to agree with your partner(s) to specific kink and sex acts, and to the intensity you want. You have to agree on what kind of roleplay resistance is okay, and on safe words or signals so you can stop at any time. Even with consent, you aren\u2019t allowed to risk seriously injuring someone.
